James Brown, “The Godfather of Soul,” is coming to Unity of Richmond Church in the West End.

Well, at least Joseph Bagby, who impersonates the late iconic performer, will perform 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the church at 800 Blanton Ave.

The program, called “Say It Loud, I’m Black & I’m Proud,” also will feature local smooth jazz band QuintEssential Jazz, which will perform several of Mr. Brown’s hits.

Bowie State University Professor Renee Charlow will host the event that organizers are calling an “entertainment symposium” and will examine the genius, originality and spirituality of an American music icon.

Audience members will be asked for an offering to benefit the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia.
