A documentary on the mass shooting at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, S.C., will be screened in Richmond, followed by a community conversation with a daughter of one of the victims.

The documentary, “Emanuel,” will be shown at 6 p.m. Friday, May 17, at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, 122 W. Leigh St.

Rose Simmons, who lost her father, the Rev. Daniel Simmons, in the June 2015 massacre, will speak.

The documentary by executive producers Stephen Curry and Viola Davis tells the story of the nine people who were killed and the survivors of the shooting that occurred as they attended a Bible study at the church. White supremacist Dylann Roof, who said he wanted to start a race war, was sentenced in state court to life without parole for the murders. He also was convicted in federal court of hate crimes and other charges and was sentenced to death. Now 25, Mr. Roof is incarcerated in a federal penitentiary in Indiana.
