Chesterfield Jayhawks capture national title

The Chesterfield Jayhawks have won the nation’s top prize for sixth-grade basketball.

In runaway fashion Coach Richard “Dip” Mason’s squad won the United States Basketball Association (USBA) National title July 15-19 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Jayhawks won going away, routing Carolina Express, 71-49, in the finals of the 50-team event.

In earlier playoff rounds, the Jayhawks defeated the Winston-Salem Mavericks, 57-31, in the Round of 16; Ballerz, Fla., 71-57, in quarterfinals; and Michigan Tranzition, 57-27, in semifinals.

The Jayhawks rolled into knockout rounds with a 4-0 mark in preliminary pool play.

Although the team is called the Chesterfield Jayhawks, it is made up predominantly of children from Richmond Public Schools.

It took the name Chesterfield from its practice site at Falling Creek Elementary School in the county.

The championship roster included Keon Allen, Ikechi Chantilou, Curtis Hayes, Bryan Mason, Jordan N. Parham, Zy’Aire Richardson, Rodney Roane, Javon Swinn and Jacqueal Thomas. The Jayhawks finished 77-5 overall, according to Mason.

The Jayhawks were one of two national champs from Richmond. Team Loaded prevailed at Myrtle Beach in the fourth-grade tournament.

The Chesterfield Jayhawks also have done well at other national tournaments.

The Jayhawks fourth-grade team won the National Travel Basketball Association’s gold division.

The Richmond-based team beat the Capitol City Vipers of Columbia, S.C., 41-36 to capture the national title July 27.

Meanwhile, the sixth-grade team placed third in the AAU Division I national tournament in Virginia Beach, while the Jayhawks’ third-grade team placed third in AAU’s Division II tournament.
