Virginia State University appears to be headed on the right track with the addition of interim President Pamela V. Hammond.
In just over 30 days at the helm, Dr. Hammond, a nurse educator from Whistler, Ala., has raised nearly a half-million dollars for the historically black institution in Ettrick.
And the Virginia General Assembly is poised to shore up VSU’s student need-based financial aid with a $950,000 infusion written into the state budget for 2017.
That’s an admirable start.
Gutsy and determined, Dr. Hammond has the qualities that — with the firm support of the university’s board and the demonstrative backing of fellow administrators and faculty — have the making of success.
Dr. Hammond, a quick study, already has identified key areas on which she is focusing. They include stabilizing enrollment, increasing revenue and restoring the university’s brand.
So far for this semester, she has managed to stem the damaging enrollment slump, avoiding any faculty and staff layoffs or furloughs.
Dr. Hammond is not afraid to ask for money, and alumni and friends are responding by giving. Early this month, Warren Thompson, chairman and president of the Northern Virginia -based Thompson Hospitality Inc.,which is the nation’s largest black-owned food services company, presented Dr. Hammond with a check for $200,000.
The company got its start at VSU, and currently offers food service and catering at VSU’s Gateway Center.
Other companies and foundations are following suit with gifts of support for the university, which celebrates its 133rd Founder’s Day on Friday, March 6.
It’s a perfect time for all who believe in VSU — and Dr. Hammond’s direction and leadership — to help ensure the university’s future.
