Wallace Dooley Jr., who served as sports information director at Virginia State University and a number of historically black colleges, died Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at a hospice in Nashville, Tenn.

He was 68.

Mr. Dooley had a long and varied career, serving as a sports information director at five universities. He worked at Alabama A&M University from 1978-80, University of the District of Columbia, 1981-84; Virginia State University, 1984-88; North Carolina Central University, 1988-92; and most recently at his alma mater, Tennessee State University.

In 1984, he helped establish the Black College Sports Information Directors Association.

In 1996, Mr. Dooley worked with the Atlanta Olympics as a venue press chief.

He was CIAA media relations director from 1992 to 1996 and served as associate commissioner of communications for the Southwestern Athletic Conference from 2001 to 2006.

A funeral service was held at Metropolitan Interdenominational Church in Nashville on Monday, July 27, 2015.
