A portion of North 5th Street was closed Wednesday to start the second phase of work on the bridges beside the Richmond Coliseum.

Southbound traffic on 5th Street is being detoured at Jackson Street to 3rd Street and south for two blocks. Motorists can then return to 5th Street via East Marshall Street, according to the city Department of Public Works.

The detour is expected to be in effect until at least mid-August while a bridge carrying 5th Street traffic over East Leigh Street at the Coliseum is replaced, the department stated in its announcement.

The change adds to the traffic disruption that began in January with the first phase of the bridge work on North 7th Street.

This first phase is replacing the bridge that carries traffic north on 7th Street over Leigh Street at the Coliseum, the department has stated.

The 7th Street bridge work is 30 days behind the schedule announced earlier by the city department. That work, which was to be done by mid-May, is now to be completed in mid-June, the department stated in an update.

The first phase also has closed Leigh Street between 4th and 8th streets and a piece of North 9th Street between Jackson and Duval streets.

Corman Construction of Annapolis, Md., is working on the $3.6 million project. The city and state are sharing the cost.
