Henrico County Sheriff Michael L. Wade spotted a personnel opportunity when he learned that Petersburg was closing its jail.

The upshot: Sheriff Wade is hiring 36 of the deputies that Petersburg let go last month.

As a result, “for the first time, I won’t have any vacancies,” Sheriff Wade said. “These are good people, and I’m glad to get them.”

He plans to swear in 33 of the deputies Monday, May 18. He said three others will start as soon as they pass physicals.

Sheriff Wade said about 362 deputies currently are on his staff. He said the new arrivals would fill 20 vacancies as well as 15 additional positions the Virginia Compensation Board just approved.

He said he was able to match or improve the pay that the new deputies were receiving in Petersburg.

“Their loss is our gain,” he said.
