Petersburg Sheriff Vanessa Crawford is taking a new tack to help parents learn whether their children are experimenting with drugs.

The sheriff announced she is teaming up with TestMyTeen.com to offer free drug testing kits for parents to use at home.

“For years, law enforcement has been the first to know when kids used drugs while their parents were often the last to know,” Sheriff Crawford said. “Now there is a way to reverse the trend.”

The effort could give teens a socially acceptable way to avoid drug use by telling friends that their parents test them, she said.

Sheriff Crawford offered the following instructions to allow parents to order a free kit from the company.

First, go to www.TestMyTeen.com. Under “Products,” add the 10 Drug Test Kit to the shopping basket. After filling out billing and shipping information, add coupon code 7B6Y8 during checkout.

The coupon eliminates the $18.95 cost of the drug testing kit, leaving only the shipping and handling charge, a Free Press test showed. The minimum shipping and handling cost is $6.95 per order, according to the website.

The company has separate home tests for tobacco and alcohol use in case parents are worried their children are smoking or drinking without their knowledge.

TestMyTeen has agreed to provide one kit per family to help parents protect their children from substance abuse, the sheriff said.
