Robert Saleh is the first Muslim to become a head coach in the NFL.
The 41-year-old native of Dearborn, Mich., has been named coach of the New York Jets, replacing Adam Gase, after a 2-14 season.
Saleh, of Lebanese ancestry, served as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers from 2017 to 2020, helping the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020.
He was NFL Coordinator of the Year for 2021.
Saleh previously served as an NFL assistant coach with Jacksonville, Seattle and Houston and earned a Super Bowl ring with the Seattle Seahawks in 2014.
The Jets will have the second overall pick behind the Jack- sonville Jaguars in the April 29-May 1 NFL draft.
