The Cincinnati Reds’ rookie right-hander set a Major League record Saturday, April 16, with 39 pitches clocked at 100 mph or more.

The previous mark was 33 set by the New York Mets’ Jacob deGrom last June. Despite his blazing fastball that topped at 102 mph, the Reds lost 5-2 at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles. It was something of a homecoming for Greene, who is from nearby Sherman Oaks, Calif.

The 6-foot-5 Greene threw a total of 80 pitches against Los Angeles before coming out in the sixth inning following a Trae Turner home run. He finished with six strikeouts.

Greene was selected by the Reds with the second overall pick in the 2017 draft. In 184 minor league innings, he struck out 241 batters.
