Parking for anyone going to the John Marshall Courts Building just became more difficult—and expensive.

Parking for anyone going to the John Marshall Courts Building just became more difficult—and expensive.

The main parking lot outside the courthouse has been shut down to make way for development of GRTC’s new $2.2 million temporary transfer station that will have 12 bays when completed next spring.

The public parking lot, which also served city employees, filled the block bounded by 8th, 9th, Clay and Leigh streets. It closed Monday as work began.

To fill the gap, City Hall is encouraging those going to the courthouse to park in the Coliseum Parking Garage, which sits just west of the former lot at 501 N. 7th St. Cost: $5 an hour or $20 for all day.

That is more expensive than the metered spaces that were in the lot that cost $2 an hour. Some metered street parking still exists, but the daily traffic to the courthouse means those spaces mostly stay filled.
