3 Richmond Symphony concerts highlight MLK

The Richmond Symphony has scheduled three concerts leading up to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, which is Jan. 15.
Symphony performances include: Friday, Jan. 12 and Sunday, Jan. 13, the Richmond Symphony will present “A Tribute to Gospel Legend Richard Smallwood” at 8 p.m at the Dominion Energy Center’s Carpenter Theatre.
For 40 years, the energy of Grammy Award-winning arranger, Richard Smallwood, has brought gospel and pop together and megastars such as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Destiny’s Child have performed his music.
Dr. Henry Panion III, conductor with local community choirs, is conducting. The concerts will feature guest vocalists along with Richmond’s finest gospel choirs performing with the Richmond Symphony.

On Sunday, Jan. 14, the Richmond Symphony presents the “Celebrate MLK” concert at 3 p.m. at the Dominion Energy Center’s Carpenter Theatre. The concert for all ages will honor Dr. King and celebrate his global message to “end racism in the pursuit of world peace, dignity for labor and equality for all mankind.”
