Richmond and Henrico health officials are reminding residents to celebrate New Year’s Eve safely by avoiding celebratory gunfire and keeping firearms securely stored.

“New Year’s Eve is a time to gather with friends and family and celebrate the promise of the year ahead,” said Richmond and Henrico Health Districts Deputy Director Melissa Viray. “We encourage our communities to celebrate responsibly, keep firearms safely stored, and avoid celebratory gunfire.”

Firearm injuries remain a serious public health concern in Virginia. The state reported 2,488 emergency department visits for firearm injuries in 2023, according to the Virginia Department of Health. Officials suggested alternatives to firing guns, including using noisemakers, making music with friends and family, or preparing traditional New Year’s Day foods. They also advised calling 911 immediately if you hear or witness gunfire rather than confronting those responsible.

Richmond and Henrico health officials urged residents to store firearms unloaded and locked, with ammunition kept separately; use lockable cases, safes or cable locks; remove firearms from homes if someone is struggling with mental health issues; ask about firearm storage practices before sending children to another home; teach children about the dangers of firearms and safe storage; and review personal firearm safety practices.

Officials noted that the holidays can bring stress or difficult emotions. Anyone in need of support can call or text 988. The health districts coordinate the Trauma Healing Response Network, which tracks and supports community-based, culturally responsive programs to respond to gun violence.

The health districts said their goal is to keep Virginians injury-free this New Year’s Eve and into 2026. For more information, visit rhhd.gov.
