A Richmond nonprofit will celebrate Black excellence through science, innovation and creativity with a free community expo this month.

Peter Paul RVA’s event, titled “Black Brilliance, Innovations, and Future Possibilities,” runs from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25 at its Coleman Promise Center, 1708 N. 22nd St.

Students and educators designed the expo, which features interactive exhibits, student projects, science demonstrations and film screenings showcasing Richmond’s Black trailblazers. The films were created by middle and high school students.

Attendees will explore historical STEM innovations by Black scientists, engineers and inventors, as well as contemporary breakthroughs in science and technology.

The expo caps a monthlong study in which students examined contributions of Black scientists, engineers, inventors and community leaders.

“Our goal is to help every student see themselves as powerful problem-solvers and future leaders in STEM, inspired by these groundbreaking individuals,” said Kim Bailey, lead teacher and committee chair.

Peter Paul RVA is a community-based nonprofit serving Richmond’s East End. The organization provides education programs, mental health support, health care access, financial literacy classes and services for older adults.
