VCU freshman Aubree Harris was named the Atlantic 10 women’s track and field Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. Harris earned the honor after posting the conference’s top time in the 60-meter hurdles at the VMI Winter Relays on Saturday.
After qualifying for the 60-meter hurdles finals with an 8.54-second time on Friday, Harris ran a personal-record 8.52 seconds in the finals to finish second in a field of 34 competitors. Her time also ranks third in VCU program history for the event.
Harris has steadily improved in her first year of collegiate competition. She placed fifth in her debut at the VCU Rams Indoor Invitational with an 8.82-second finish and recorded her first collegiate win at the Liberty Open on Jan. 23 with an 8.59-second time.
Harris is the second VCU women’s track and field athlete to earn an A-10 weekly award this season. Thrower Desi Akaolisa was named Field Performer of the Week on Jan. 20. Harris is also the second Ram rookie to win the weekly award, following jumper Destiny Ese, who earned the honor on the men’s side after the VCU Rams Indoor Invitational.
Harris and the Rams return to action this weekend at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational at Liberty. She is scheduled to compete in the 60-meter hurdles prelims at 2:20 p.m. Friday, with the semifinals at 3:35 p.m. and the finals at 12:25 p.m. Saturday.
