This long vacant tobacco plant at 2220 Stockton St. is being transformed into a new home for CARITAS, a nonprofit that serves people who are homeless or struggling with substance abuse.
The $27 million renovation will provide a new home base for the organization led by Karen Stanley, in addition to one of the area’s largest recovery centers for female addicts.
When complete and opened next spring, the building will have 160 beds for women in recovery, plus 47 apartments for women moving into the next stage of their lives. (Sandra Sellars/Richmond Free Press)
