Efforts are in full swing to get youngsters ready for the start of classes in Richmond Public Schools. On Wednesday, Gov. Ralph S. RPS partnered with CoStar Group, the VCU Alumni Association and Communities In School for the fourth annual event that took place at The Diamond on Arthur Ashe Boulevard. The goal was to collect up to 15,000 backpacks to give to city students as they return to in-person learning for the first time since March 2020. It was William “Dil” Dillon Day at Virginia Union University last Saturday during the Panthers’ annual gridiron clash with the Trojans of Virginia State University. During halftime of the game at VUU’s Hovey Stadium, family members, former teammates and fellow members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity participate in a ceremony to officially retire the No. 42 jersey that the late Mr. Dillon wore as a VUU player from 1979 to 1982. The fraternity’s Alpha Gamma Chapter also donated $50,000 to the VUU football team during the ceremony. Mr. Dillon, a Detroit native who later won plaudits as a local softball player and high school basketball official before his death in 2017 at age 59, was recognized and remembered for his remarkable playing career. As recounted during the ceremony, Mr. Dillon was a star defender for the Panthers under Coach Willard Bailey. During his VUU career, he picked off 30 opponents’ passes, including 16 during his sophomore season. He was selected three years in a row as an Associated Press Little All-American while helping VUU earn four straight invitations to the NCAA Division II football tournament.

“Look Back, Focus Forward” was the theme for the Elegba Folklore Society’s Juneteenth “2022 Freedom Celebration” event at Richmond’s African Burial Ground in Shockoe Bottom on June 26. The evening event featured Elegba’s African dancers, music and vendors. This was the 26th anniversary of the event, which also included a youth summit, speakers and a night walk.

Happy 90th Birthday, Dr. King! Richmond Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras, right, speaks at the dedication Tuesday of a new mural honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that is located on the entryway to the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge and adjacent to the Martin Luther King Jr. Pre-School Learning Center at 900 Mosby St. in the East End. The dedication was held on what would have been Dr. King’s 90th birthday. It is the second King mural on the site done by U.N.I.T.Y. Street Project; the first was completed in July. A new historic marker recognizing the Ziontown community in Henrico County was dedicated Dec. 3 in a ceremony hosted by the Family & Friends of Ziontown and the Henrico Historic Preservation Advisory Committee as part of the Historical Roadside Marker program.The community was founded in 1870 by Henry Pryor, a formerly enslaved man, who purchased 5 acres around the area now known as Ridge Road at Fountain Lane and extending south to River Road. He named the settlement Ziontown, meaning Heavenly Place. The community grew to include about 50 homes with up to 275 residents. Subdivisions have encroached upon the area in recent decades. Last week’s celebration drew longtime residents, as well as those who grew up in the area and others with ties to the community, including the Lambert family, whose home in the 8300 block of Ridge Road served as the site of the dedication. Among the attendees are, from left, John A. Lambert Sr.; Richmond City Councilwoman Ann-Frances Lambert; Brenda Dabney Nichols, who led the marker effort; Richard A. Lambert; the Rev. Larry Collins; and Dr. Colita Nichols Fairfax.

Jammin' at the Hippodrome // Hundreds of fans showed their appreciation as R&B band Con Funk Shun jammed Saturday evening at the Hippodrome Theater in Jackson Ward. The show was moved inside to the theater after the two-day, outdoor 2nd Street Festival was cancelled by organizing group Venture Richmond because of inclement weather. During the performance, state Delegate Jennifer L. McClellan read a proclamation from the General Assembly recognizing the annual festival. Venture Richmond officials said they plan to set another date for the formal unveiling of a state historical marker commemorating Jackson Ward’s renowned former Miller’s/Eggleston Hotel. The unveiling scheduled for Oct. 2 also was postponed because of the weather.

Family and friends of DaShawn “Da Da” Cox release balloons in memory of the 17-year-old Armstrong High School student who was shot and killed about 4:40 p.m. Feb. 17 outside the Ashley Oaks Apartments in the 1400 block of Jennie Scher Road in the East End. The teen’s mother and sister, as well as city officials, spoke at the vigil held last Sunday outside the apartment complex. “This is pain that I hope nobody out here will ever have to go through,” his mother, Berthenia Brown, told the crowd through tears. “It hurts.” Richmond Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras said he has been to so many vigils for slain young people that he has lost count. “I’m a little ashamed to say that, but it’s the truth.” He and others called for an end to gun violence in the city. “Enough is enough,” said 7th District School Board member Cheryl L. Burke, a retired principal. “You all tell us what to do.” A community meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Powhatan Community Center, 5051 Northampton St., to discuss possible solutions. Police are asking anyone with information about DeShawn’s death to call Richmond Police Major Crimes Detective A. Darnell at (804) 646-3927 or to contact Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
