Farewell to a friend: Left, Greg Roland and other comrades of George Edward “Buster” Booth scatter his ashes May 29 in Byrd Park’s Swan Lake in a final farewell to a lifelong friend. Below left, James “Plunky” Branch, one of the close-knit group that grew up together in Richmond’s Randolph and Maymont neighborhoods, plays “Amazing Grace” on his saxophone ahead of the ash-scattering ceremony. Below right, a small memorial includes Mr. Booth’s obituary and photo. Former NBA star Bobby Dandridge and the Rev. Robert Winfree, who preached Mr. Booth’s eulogy, are among those who attended the ceremony that began at Byrd Park’s Shelter No. 1, one of Mr. Booth’s favorite places. Every year around Mr. Booth’s May 26 birthday, his friends would bring the longtime paraplegic to the shelter for an outing. Mr. Booth died Nov. 6, 2018, but friends waited to scatter his ashes near what would have been his 72nd birthday. Longtime friend Jerome F. The new 4,300-square-foot addition was dedicated May 30, bringing the total square footage of the building to 19,300. Vandals damaged the two wooden benches Street Station. The benches and statue wereat the Richmond Slavery Reconciliation Statue in Shockoe Bottom. The damage was discovered on Jan. 20, the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, following a gun rights demonstration that drew thousands of people to Capitol Square nearby. A Free Press photographer later spotted the problem at the 13-year-old statue site at 15th and Main streets near Main Street Station. The benches and statue were unveiled on March 30, 2007, as part of an international reconciliation project. Identical statues stand in Liverpool, England, a home port for slave ships, and in Contonou, Benin, the port from which many enslaved people were transported to Virginia before the importation of enslaved people was banned in the United States in 1807.
