New wheels for Chesterfield schools/Al Parham, supervisor of Chesterfield County Public Schools’ bus fleet, wipes off the plug-in station for the school system’s two new electric school buses during a “Plug-in Ceremony” Aug. 12 at the county’s bus maintenance facility, 7300 Walmsley Blvd. School and county officials, along with officials from Dominion Energy, attended the event held to show off the two new vehicles that were delivered in May. Chesterfield is the first municipality in Metro Richmond to receive the electric school buses through a program sponsored by Dominion Energy. Under the program, school districts pay no more for the electric buses than they would for a diesel model. The program also covers the cost of the charging stations. Work is underway on the $1.2 million renovation of Virginia Union University’s renamed Wil- lie Lanier Field at Hovey Stadium. Mr. Lanier, a former All-Star and Pro Bowl player with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1967 to 1977, played on Hovey Field when he was a student nearly 60 years ago at Richmond’s Maggie L. Walker High School next door. He has played a vital role in the project to resurface the field from grass to FieldTurf. When the VUU Panthers football team kicks off its 2020 season home opener on Oct. 3 against Shaw University, the new field will be a point of pride for the team and will put VUU on the same level as universities around the nation, officials stated. “That field shows something,” Mr. Lanier stated. “It shows the ability of what it is to provide for those young individuals who can take confidence and pride in where they play and how they are able to perform.” Squares of the old grass field, which has been in place since 1907, are being sold online to help fund the project. Confidence Building: Anthony Daniels enjoys his ballroom dancing lessons with his fellow fifth-graders at Southampton Elementary School in South Side. The program is part of Dancing Classrooms Greater Richmond, which uses ballroom dancing as a way to teach students social awareness and build self-esteem among youngsters in fifth and eighth grades. City workers Zachary Smith and D’Jermaine Layne remove graffiti from a building in the 2900 block of West Broad Street that a city official described as an “eyesore in the middle of the city.” Mr. Smith and Mr. Layne are part of a Richmond Department of Public Works crew that focuses on eliminating unwanted scribbles, initials and messages spraypainted in public spaces and on public and privately owned buildings. The department currently deploys two teams of six people and is now assembling a third team to expand the effort, according to Bobby Vincent, director of the Department of Public Works. Mayor Levar M. Stoney visited the project Monday to spotlight the department’s efforts to remove graffiti and to show that the city is committed to this seemingly never-ending effort to keep buildings spruced up. Mr. Vincent reported that the crews already have removed graffiti from 1,000 locations since July 1, double the number from the same period in 2020-21. His hope is that the dedicated crews can deal with at least 1,500 locations by June 30 and do even more locations next year. In addition, the department is contacting building owners to get them involved in this ongoing initiative. “We want to be able to clean up,” he said, but he also noted that owners need to take responsibility for tackling the problem as well.

The Baptist Min- isters’ Conference of Richmond and Vicinity, led by the Dr. Emanuel C. Harris, hosts the event to remember the day when President Abraham Lincoln issued his Civil War proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, freeing slaves in the South. The Rev. Ricardo Brown, co-pastor of Fifth Baptist Church, served as chair of the program that also raises money for area NAACP branches.

Wilder, who served as an honorary co-chair and adviser to the gubernatorial transition team, was among eight former governors attending last Saturday’s official event. As runners in the inaugural RUN RICHMOND 16.19 approached Brown’s Island Sept. 17, the Emancipation and Freedom Monument awaited them. The monument features two 12-foot bronze figures – a male, and a female holding an infant – who represent those newly freed from slavery. Designed by artist and sculptor, Thomas Jay Warren, of Oregon, the brick plaza and landscaping was designed by architect Drew Harrigan of Four Winds Design and constructed by Fred Williams and his team at Williams Construction. Here is how Venture Richmond describes the monument: "On a rainy September 22, 2021, following nearly 10 years of planning and fundraising, Virginia’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Commission dedicated and unveiled Richmond’s newest monument — the Emancipation and Freedom Monument — on Brown’s Island, along Downtown Richmond’s riverfront. The new monument commemorates the efforts of both enslaved and free African- Americans whose ancestors endured tragedies and triumphs in their struggle to gain their freedom through emancipation.”

Work crews were on the job earlier this month in preparation for the new GRTC bus transfer station in Downtown Richmond. The new transfer site was once a parking lot at 8th and Clay streets across from the John Marshall Courts Building and the vacated Public Safety Building. The transfer station will replace an older one that was along 9th Street between Marshall and Leigh streets. According to GRTC’s social media, plans are to have the new site serve more routes in order to simplify transfers. Amenities, technologies and lighting will be upgraded at the station.

Many driving by the corners of Staples Mill and Mountain Roads in Glen Allen have been watching and wondering what is this building going up on the 12 acres since April 13, 2020. There was a private groundbreaking with just a few church leaders because of the timing of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions then in place. The answer: It is the Richmond Virginia Temple, the 177th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the first in Virginia. The architecture of the temple is a blend of Georgian, Federal and Jeffersonian architecture that are adapted from European styles. Since the Temple is quite exquisite from the outside and it causes many to imagine what it looks like on the inside, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints typically provides an open house for the communities in which they build their temples for free guided tours. The public open house is from March 25 through April 15, 2023, except for Sundays and on Saturday, April 1. The official dedication will take place May 7, 2023. A local Church spokesperson says this temple will serve at least 40,000 members from Virginia and West Virginia. This does not mean forty thousand people will be in attendance at one time. Around the state there are numerous church buildings where members of the church attend their regular Sunday services. This property also has a smaller red building that will serve as an area meeting house. Temple talking points Property size: 12 acres. Building size: 39,202 square feet. Building Height: 164 feet, 9. The City of Richmond has unveiled its possible design plans for the former site of the Robert E. Lee statue on Monument Avenue. The controversial statue was removed one year ago after the Virginia Supreme Court ruled 7-0 that “values change and public policy changes, too” in a democracy. The site frequently is referred to as the Marcus David Peters Circle by some community activists since the summer of 2020 following the deaths of George Floyd and other Black people who died at the hands of law enforcement. The city’s Urban Design Committee will review the temporary plans that include removing the fencing and concrete graffiti barriers and installing landscaping that could cost up to $100,000. According to the City, this is not the final plan for the “Reimagine Monument Avenue” project. A meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 8, convened by the Urban Design Committee, to discuss plans. The Richmond Planning Commission’s final vote is scheduled Sept. 19.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Walker! Richmond area residents took time recently to remember pioneering Richmond businesswoman Maggie L. Walker in honor of what would have been her 157th birthday on July 15. While she is best known as the first Black woman to found and serve as president of a bank in the United States, she also was a civil rights and voting rights advocate, newspaper publisher, store owner and politician and all around community leader. Her home at 110 ½ E. Leigh St. is a national historic site run by the National Park Service, which held a public celebration of Mrs. Walker’s birthday July 17 in the courtyard behind her home and the NPS visitors’ center on the site at 600 N. 2nd St. Samuel L. Houston, 11, of Short Pump enjoys a birthday celebration cupcake in the courtyard, where he joined with his parents, Pamela and Cedric Houston, to learn about Mrs. Walker and her legacy.
