The 40-foot pedestal where the enormous bronze statue of Confederate Robert E. Lee on horseback once stood on Monument Avenue was finally cleared away Wednesday afternoon by crews working for 14 days. The Lee statue was removed in September. The site is to be cleaned and the ground leveled. The state is expected to turn ownership of the land over to the City of Richmond after Christmas.

Rabbi Scott M. Three lights are lit to recognize the third day of Hanukkah, which started Sunday and runs through Monday, Dec. 6. The menorah also is similar to Kwanzaa’s seven-branch kinara in which candles are lit daily to mark the seven principals of the African-American cultural holiday. Kwanzaa starts Sunday, Dec. 26, and continues through New Year’s Day, Saturday, Jan. 1.

Welcoming the burgundy and gold/There’s no doubt that the Washington Football Team has real diehard fans in Richmond. After a year’s hiatus because of COVID-19, the NFL team received a big welcome back to its Richmond training camp on Wednesday by fans who turned out in droves. More than 1,000 at-home COVID-19 test kits were given out in less than three hours Sunday at Henderson Middle School on Old Brook Road in North Side, one of four distribution sites for Richmond Public Schools families. Residential units represent a big change for the Baker property that had been a school site since 1871. According to the city school system, this building opened in 1940 as a replacement for the worn-out original. Closed as an elementary school in 1979, the building was renamed for a former principal, Katherine L. Johnson, and was used as an alternative school for troubled middle and high school students until 2013 when RPS vacated the building.

A ceremonial mechanical excavator is on site for the groundbreaking at the CoStar Group’s campus in Downtown Richmond in front of the current CoStar headquarters building at 5th and Tredegar streets. CoStar, founded in 1987, provides commercial real estate information, analytics, and online marketplaces for real estate transactions. Community partners, CoStar employees and the public witnessed the ceremonial groundbreaking and announcements about the $460 million project that is projected to bring at least 2,000 new jobs to the area.

McQueen, a Texas resident who has led a four-year fight to preserve and protect the burial ground where relatives are buried and who has pushed for the cemetery’s recognition and designation as a national historic site, joined Mayor Levar M. Runners take off during the inaugural RUN RICHMOND 16.19 that started and ended at Kanawha Plaza in Downtown Richmond on Saturday, Sept. 17. The run was organized by actor and model Djimon Hounsou’s foundation in collaboration with The Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia and Sports Backers. The run shines a light on the achievements of the Black community over the past 400 plus years with the designated courses of 16.19 km and 6.19 miles. As the runners proceed on the course they pass various historical Black sites throughout the city.
