CITYSCAPE-As these photos show, iconic cement silos, left, in the East End have come down. The once proud symbols of Lehigh Cement Co. were demolished in the past two weeks as part of $10 million in improvements the city is undertaking along the north bank of the James River. Winchester-based Howard Shockey & Sons Inc., which did not have any minority partners, cleared the silos, whose site is to be a park. Other projects: The $4 million city portion of the Virginia Capital Trail to which the city contributed $820,000 and the Low-Line Project, a $1.4 million landscaping venture alongside the trail to which the city contributed $200,000 and private sources are donating $1.2 million.

Splashing into the season/ Evan Mayfield, 10, whipped down the water slide Saturday at the 3rd Annual Cookout for a Cause at Westover Hills Elementary School in South Side. The free event, sponsored by Feed the Streets RVA, featured games, arts and crafts, bounce houses, food, music and other activities and vendors for youngsters and families to enjoy. Organizers asked only that each person bring a nonperishable food item to support FeedMore, Central Virginia’s hunger relief organization. Bateau marker unveiled/Dr. Arvat McLain and Dr. Harry Watkins unveil the state historical marker honoring the James River bateaumen last Saturday at 301 Virginia St. near the Kanawha Canal Turning Basin in Shockoe Slip. Long, flat-bottomed boats known as bateaux transported tobacco, coal and other goods between Richmond and points west from the 1770s through the mid-1800s. The bateaux often were piloted through the canal and along the James River by crews of free or enslaved African-Americans. Landscaping work that started in early June by YME Landscape continues on the former site of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The Supreme Court of Virginia ruled Sept 2., 2021 that the state could remove the enormous statue that towered over Monument Avenue in the state’s capital for more than a century and had, for many, become a symbol of racial injustice. Calls to remove the statue and others like it that were and remain scattered throughout the United States increased following the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Detroit police on Memorial Day 2020. The defeated war general’s final fate came on Sept. 8, 2021, with the removal of a 21-foot high bronze sculpture in his image and his horse, Traveller, on a granite pedestal nearly twice that tall.
