The site of the former Oak Grove Elementary School has been vacant since January 2013 when Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary opened its doors. The Redeemer Assembly of Jesus Christ originally lost its bid of $275,000 to purchase the site after a City Council vote in August 2022. In September 2022, City Council approved Lynx Ventures’s request to purchase the site for $500,000.

The installation of new infrastructure continues for new housing in the Creighton Court community, 2101 Creighton Road. One of the revitalization goals of Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority for the redevelopment of the Creighton Court community is to provide more affordable housing options by increasing density and, build more units than what is currently there now. Currently, there are 504 units in Creighton Court. The approved Master Plan is designed for an increase of 196 mixed-income units, for a total of 700 units on the site.

Virginia Union University officials recently announced a partnership with the Steinbridge Group and the Student Freedom Initiative to build 130 to 200 residences on the northern edge of VUU’s campus. Attending the Feb. 2 announcement at the university’s Claude G. Perkins Living and Learning Center were Leonard L. Sledge, director of the Department of Economic Development for the City of Richmond; Ann-Frances Lambert, City Council vice president; Tawan Davis, Steinbridge Group founding partner and CEO; Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, VUU board chairman; Keith Shoates, COO of the Student Freedom Initiative; and Dr. Hakim Lucas, VUU president.

Organizers of the People’s Tribunal on Virginia’s Prisons, Jails & Detention Centers hosted a press conference on Jan. 10, the opening day of the 2024 Virginia General Assembly, to highlight its final report that is being sent to all 140 state legislators. The People’s Tribunal also gathered to show solidarity with prisoners at the Red Onion State Prison who, since Dec. 26, have been on a hunger strike to protest the continued use of solitary confinement in the Virginia Department of Corrections, an issue that many thought had been settled by a bill in the 2023 General Assembly.

The site of an African burial ground at 5th and Hospital streets is shown from Interstate 64 going westbound. The name of the burial ground was added to the front side of a repainted gas station building constructed in 1959 at 1305 N. 5th St. Also known as the Shockoe Hill Burial Ground, the 1.2 acre plat on which this building stands is part of the original 1816 “Burying Ground for Free People of Colour” and the “Burying Ground for Negroes” (enslaved).
