New city-backed developments involving millions of dollars are beginning to take shape in the East End. Left, heavy machinery churns the ground at 1611 N. 31st St., site of the former Armstrong High School. The purpose: To prepare the site for development of 175 new apartments and 81 single-family homes. It is the first step in replacing the Creighton Court public housing community. A nonprofit, The Community Builders, is leading the project for the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Right, just six blocks west at Nine Mile Road, Fairmount Avenue and 25th Street, more heavy machinery is preparing the site for two four-story buildings. One building will provide space for Reynolds Community College’s $11.5 million culinary institute, a dozen apartments, a restaurant and offices. The second building is to include space for a modern grocery store and smaller retail shops and 42 apartments. Corporate leaders Steve and Kathy Merkel are spearheading the development that is expected to exceed $20 million. The revitalization of the area also includes new apartments on Venable Street and other smaller retail and residential developments across Church Hill.

A temporary sign at the University of Richmond now marks the Westham Burial Ground for enslaved people who worked on a plantation that became the campus. The signs tell what is known about the people, the burial site and its desecration and details the university’s plans to memorialize it. Shelby Driskill, a UR graduate researcher, is credited with the initial study that brought the site to public attention. Noted historian Dr. Lauranett Lee and Ms. Driskill are leading UR’s commemorative initiative and have produced a comprehensive report to assist in that effort.

Work crews were on the job earlier this month in preparation for the new GRTC bus transfer station in Downtown Richmond. The new transfer site was once a parking lot at 8th and Clay streets across from the John Marshall Courts Building and the vacated Public Safety Building. The transfer station will replace an older one that was along 9th Street between Marshall and Leigh streets. According to GRTC’s social media, plans are to have the new site serve more routes in order to simplify transfers. Amenities, technologies and lighting will be upgraded at the station.

Nine nearly simultaneous explosions were triggered to bring the 42-year-old building down, leaving the debris for workers and heavy equipment to remove. The implosion was rated a success; there were no reports of damage to nearby buildings or city utilities. Scores of people found vantage points outside the 15-block safety zone to see the event live, while others watched on TV or via Dominion’s lives- tream. Dominion is contemplating plans to construct a new building on the site. Already, the company has erected the first of two towers next door at 600 E. Canal St. and has approval to build a matching tower on the site where One James River Plaza stood.

Many driving by the corners of Staples Mill and Mountain Roads in Glen Allen have been watching and wondering what is this building going up on the 12 acres since April 13, 2020. There was a private groundbreaking with just a few church leaders because of the timing of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions then in place. The answer: It is the Richmond Virginia Temple, the 177th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the first in Virginia. The architecture of the temple is a blend of Georgian, Federal and Jeffersonian architecture that are adapted from European styles. Since the Temple is quite exquisite from the outside and it causes many to imagine what it looks like on the inside, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints typically provides an open house for the communities in which they build their temples for free guided tours. The public open house is from March 25 through April 15, 2023, except for Sundays and on Saturday, April 1. The official dedication will take place May 7, 2023. A local Church spokesperson says this temple will serve at least 40,000 members from Virginia and West Virginia. This does not mean forty thousand people will be in attendance at one time. Around the state there are numerous church buildings where members of the church attend their regular Sunday services. This property also has a smaller red building that will serve as an area meeting house. Temple talking points Property size: 12 acres. Building size: 39,202 square feet. Building Height: 164 feet, 9. Inches, including the statue of the Book of Mormon prophet Moroni. Architect: The Richardson Deign Partnership. Church architect: Lanny Herron. Cost: The Church does not discuss money with the public.

Cityscape //Last April, it was just a hole in the ground. Now the $6.3 million Eggleston Plaza is taking shape at 2nd and Leigh streets in Jackson Ward. When completed in 2017, the project will include 31 apartments and a first-floor restaurant. The building occupies the former site of Eggleston Hotel, one of the few places that civil rights leaders, entertainers and other African-Americans could stay during the era of segregation when most city hotels barred non-white guests. The old hotel collapsed and the site was cleared in 2009. The plaza sits across from the renovated Hippodrome Theater and the Taylor Mansion entertainment, restaurant and residential complex. The development includes another 10 townhouse-style apartments at 1st and Jackson streets that already are being rented.
