Abby Klein creates a work of art Friday atop a storm drain on Tredegar Street near Brown’s Island as curious passers-by watch her progress. She is one of five artists selected by the Richmond Department of Public Utilities from 55 for the first phase of the Storm Drain Art Project. Ms. Klein’s work is titled, “You drop it, I drink it.” The other four artists who are painting drains along Tredegar Street are Alfonso Perez Acosta, Nicole Gomez, Melissa Greedy and Richard Lucente. The city is paying a commission of $300 to each artist and later plans to award a $200 prize to the artist whose work the public votes as their favorite. The project was set up as a fun, creative approach to educate the public to keep the drains free of litter and not use the drains to get rid of oil and other toxins that could pollute the city’s waterways and, ultimately, the James River into which storm water flows.

Richmond’s oldest fire station has a date with a wrecking ball after 114 years. This is Fire Station No. 12, which opened at 2223 W. Cary St. in 1908 when horses pulled the equipment to fires. Plans for replacing this historic station with a new building at the site began in earnest last year. The city has invested in design and is now reviewing construction bids that were received by the Tuesday deadline. After more than a year of construction, a residential and retail complex is taking shape in Church Hill in the block bounded by Nine Mile Road, Fairmount Avenue and 25th, 24th and Redd streets. Looking north from S Street, the complex’s largest element is the new apartment buildings, at left, with 42 units that face Fairmount Avenue. At the center, just beyond a barricade blocking entry to 25th Street is the building that will house the new grocery store, the Market at 25th. At right, the steel skeleton of the J. Sargeant Reynolds Culinary School is going up adjacent to Nine Mile Road. The city has contributed $500,000 to support the development Steven and Kathie Markel are undertaking with other partners, including J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. It was a day to remember last Saturday as hundreds of people gathered for the unveiling of the Maggie L. Walker statue in the new plaza at Broad and Adams streets in Downtown. The 10-foot bronze statue of the pioneer businesswoman and icon was revealed to fanfare and cheers on what would have been Mrs. Walker’s 153rd birthday. Speakers included city officials, sculptor Antonio “Toby” Mendez and Walker descendants. The new monument to a true hero serves as a gateway to Jackson Ward, where Mrs. Walker’s home, now a National Park Service historic site, is open to the public.

Timothy Christian sorts through a box of fresh leafy greens as he prepares for holiday shoppers at the 17th Street Farmers’ Market in Shockoe Bottom. Similar markets have sprouted in the Richmond area, but this market is the oldest. It has been a public gathering place since 1737, five years before Richmond was incorporated as a town. The site was designated as a “public market” in 1779, just a year before Richmond was officially named the state capital and three years before Richmond was designated an independent city. The city is to give the market area a facelift to create a more European-style plaza.

Two acres of green space that previously wasn’t used has been turned into a lush garden with more than 80 fruit trees, colorful murals by local artists, benches for meditation, open spaces for yoga and gatherings and a covered outdoor kitchen. Participants wandered through the garden and learned more about the products, services and programming planned for the site. Mr. Duron, the lead volunteer on the project, said fresh fruit grown at the orchard will be available free to everyone. The project is designed to boost healthy living and eating while offering more park space in South Side.

A towering crane’s reflection almost looks like a staircase rising up the side of this 20-story Downtown building under construction for Dominion Energy in the block bounded by 6th, 7th, Canal and Cary streets. Crews and cranes have been at the site since work began last year. The building will be known as 600 Canal Place when it opens next year. Dominion Energy has presented plans to a construct a second building to replace its 21-story Virginia headquarters, One James River Plaza, located next door at 701 E. Cary St.

Farewell to a friend: Left, Greg Roland and other comrades of George Edward “Buster” Booth scatter his ashes May 29 in Byrd Park’s Swan Lake in a final farewell to a lifelong friend. Below left, James “Plunky” Branch, one of the close-knit group that grew up together in Richmond’s Randolph and Maymont neighborhoods, plays “Amazing Grace” on his saxophone ahead of the ash-scattering ceremony. Below right, a small memorial includes Mr. Booth’s obituary and photo. Former NBA star Bobby Dandridge and the Rev. Robert Winfree, who preached Mr. Booth’s eulogy, are among those who attended the ceremony that began at Byrd Park’s Shelter No. 1, one of Mr. Booth’s favorite places. Every year around Mr. Booth’s May 26 birthday, his friends would bring the longtime paraplegic to the shelter for an outing. Mr. Booth died Nov. 6, 2018, but friends waited to scatter his ashes near what would have been his 72nd birthday. Longtime friend Jerome F. A bevy of volunteers work to weed and produce a bountiful harvest of vegetables at the Broad Rock Community Garden located at the intersection of Broad Rock Road and Stockton Street in South Side. The effort is part of the Resiliency Garden project under the coalition Beautiful RVA to increase access to healthy foods in an area that had been designated as a food desert by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The City of Richmond provided the land as a Richmond Grows Gardens site, with the Ginter Urban Gardeners building the raised beds, an outdoor kitchen, play area for children and rainwater containers to use to water the crops. Duron Chavis, this week’s Free Press Personality, and Happily Natural are part of the coalition.

Richmond Free Press Publisher Jean P. Boone receives a citation from 4th District Congressman A. Donald McEachin — a copy of his remarks placed in the Congressional Record commemorating the newspaper’s 25th anniversary. The Congressional Record is the official record of the proceedings and debates of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. In remarks he delivered Feb. 13 on the House floor, Rep. McEachin lauded the independent, black-owned Free Press as a “voice for all people since its inception.” He recalled the newspaper’s late founder, Raymond H. Boone, and noted that the Free Press “has altered the media landscape of Richmond, the former capital of the Confederacy,” with its award-winning coverage. The Free Press, he said, “does not only chronicle history, it has made history for the last 25 years.” The newspaper celebrated its silver anniversary on Jan. 16.

Lots of music, lots, of folk/ Richmond’s Downtown riverfront came alive with people and music last weekend as thousands of people turned out for the Richmond Folk Festival. The festival, produced by Venture Richmond Events, was free. But volunteers and other team members with the festival, including Ricardo walked around with buckets seeking donations to support the annual event that has brought world music to Richmond for the last 15 years.
