Vandals damaged the two wooden benches Street Station. The benches and statue wereat the Richmond Slavery Reconciliation Statue in Shockoe Bottom. The damage was discovered on Jan. 20, the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, following a gun rights demonstration that drew thousands of people to Capitol Square nearby. A Free Press photographer later spotted the problem at the 13-year-old statue site at 15th and Main streets near Main Street Station. The benches and statue were unveiled on March 30, 2007, as part of an international reconciliation project. Identical statues stand in Liverpool, England, a home port for slave ships, and in Contonou, Benin, the port from which many enslaved people were transported to Virginia before the importation of enslaved people was banned in the United States in 1807.

Three-year-old Mikenzie “Button” Williams recruits game officials for cheering duty last Saturday during halftime of the exciting Richmond Parks and Recreation Pee Wee Football championship game. The Battery Park Vikings defeated the Hotchkiss Eagles 6-0 in overtime, clinching the title for 9- and 10-year-olds at City Stadium. Championship matches also were played in four other age groups. The plaza at Broad and Adams streets is expected to be complete in four to six weeks. The bronze statue of Mrs. Walker “is finished,” sculptor Tony Mendez said Wednesday. It was completed two weeks ago, he said. He’s now awaiting instructions from the city about when it is to be delivered to the site. So far, City Hall has yet to announce a date for the dedication as officials work with the Mrs. Walker’s descendants on the timing. Mr. Mendez said there has been talk about holding the program on Saturday, July 15, Mrs. Walker’s birth date. This year would be the 153rd anniversary of the birth of the founder and president of the first bank to be chartered by an African-American woman. The total project cost: About $900,000.

Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras was joined by members of the RPS School Board, Mayor Levar M. Stoney, and other elected officials to break ground on the site of the new Richmond High School for the Arts, which will replace George Wythe High School. “I’m proud that students on the South Side will soon be able to walk into a brand new state-of-the-art facility, but what I will be even prouder of is the future graduates and what they will achieve in their lives,” Mayor Stoney said. "If we give them opportunity, not just a building, I know without a doubt that any graduate can succeed in this city." Following a public process of community engagement and neighborhood meetings, the chosen design of the new school was made by Richmond parents, students, teachers, and community members. Residents voted for their preferred prototype and design styles, which were later approved by the RPS School Board.

Robotic ruckus: Students from Richmond’s Lucille Brown Middle School compete in the “Rover Ruckus FIRST Tech Challenge” held at Richmond Community High School last Friday. Teams of 12 students from the city’s middle schools, Franklin Military Academy and Community High designed, built and programmed a competition robot from a kit without instructions. Then, using remote controls, the students had 2½ minutes to maneuver their robots to pick up as many different shaped objects as possible and place them in a container. The robot placing the most objects in the container during the time limit was declared the winner. Members of Extinction Rebellion Richmond stage a silent die-in on the steps of City Hall around noon on Monday as members calling themselves the “Red Rebel Brigade” look on. The 11-minute action, designed to call attention to the need for action to abate climate change, came after the group delivered a Declaration of the Global Climate Emergency to the office of Mayor Levar M. Stoney, urging him and other officials to declare a climate state of emergency in the city. The group has demonstrated weekly in Monroe Park since June and was part of a global climate action on Monday in 60 countries.
