Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras was joined by members of the RPS School Board, Mayor Levar M. Stoney, and other elected officials to break ground on the site of the new Richmond High School for the Arts, which will replace George Wythe High School. “I’m proud that students on the South Side will soon be able to walk into a brand new state-of-the-art facility, but what I will be even prouder of is the future graduates and what they will achieve in their lives,” Mayor Stoney said. "If we give them opportunity, not just a building, I know without a doubt that any graduate can succeed in this city." Following a public process of community engagement and neighborhood meetings, the chosen design of the new school was made by Richmond parents, students, teachers, and community members. Residents voted for their preferred prototype and design styles, which were later approved by the RPS School Board.

The political advocacy group MoveOn’s Banned Bookmobile made a stop at Richmond’s Main Public Library in Downtown during its trips around the country. The bookmobile is seeking counter book bans imposed by Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis and mostly Republican leaders in other states by rallying supporters and distributing free copies of award-winning books ranging from “To Kill a Mockingbird” to “The Hunger Games,” “Gender Queer,” “The Kite Runner” and “Beloved.” Dr. Lauranett Lee, a historian, educator and candidate for a seat on the Chesterfield County School Board, was among the speakers at the event.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Virginia War Memorial is honoring the nearly 12,000 Virginia men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to Virginia and the United States by planting 12,000 American flags on the hill alongside the Shrine of Memory. The flags were placed on the hill June 23 by more than 150 volunteers, including Virginia’s First Lady Suzanne Youngkin, soldiers from Fort Gregg-Adams and various Boy Scouts troops. Volunteers are needed to help removed them tomorrow. “We are again asking for your assistance in helping the Virginia War Memorial recruit volunteers to assist in removing the flags on Friday, July 14, at 8 a.m.,” said Jeb Hockman, senior communications adviser, Virginia Department of Veterans Services. Volunteers may show up at Virginia War Memorial, 621 S. Belvidere St. to help with this effort. Landscaping work that started in early June by YME Landscape continues on the former site of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The Supreme Court of Virginia ruled Sept 2., 2021 that the state could remove the enormous statue that towered over Monument Avenue in the state’s capital for more than a century and had, for many, become a symbol of racial injustice. Calls to remove the statue and others like it that were and remain scattered throughout the United States increased following the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Detroit police on Memorial Day 2020. The defeated war general’s final fate came on Sept. 8, 2021, with the removal of a 21-foot high bronze sculpture in his image and his horse, Traveller, on a granite pedestal nearly twice that tall.

Dennis Parker Sr. and his son, Dennis Parker Jr., are both athletic standouts in the history of John Marshall High School. The elder Parker played football at JM from 1985 to 1988 under Coach Lou Anderson and at Virginia Union University under Coach Joe Taylor. Parker Jr. helped lead JM’s team to the 2023 state title for the third year in which the team has played since COVID-19. The younger Parker was named high school basketball player of the year in Virginia and will play for North Carolina State University.
