Wilder, who served as an honorary co-chair and adviser to the gubernatorial transition team, was among eight former governors attending last Saturday’s official event. Also attending were former Govs. Chuck Robb; Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, who both currently serve in the U.S. Senate; George Allen; Jim Gilmore; and Bob McDonnell. Outgoing Gov. Ralph S. Northam ceremonially turned over the keys to the Executive Mansion and posed for a photo with the auspicious group of former leaders before the swearing in, and left the ceremony after the oath of office was administered. Former Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who lost November’s election to Gov. Youngkin, did not attend.

Mandela Fellows at VCU // Fifty emerging leaders in the fields of public management, business and entrepreneurship from various African nations pose with Virginia Commonwealth University President Michael Rao and several staff members following an event Monday welcoming them to the Richmond campus. Participants in the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders will hear from scholars and elected officials and visit local businesses while in residence at VCU through July 31. The group also is scheduled to attend a reception hosted by Gov. Terry McAuliffe and First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe at the Executive Mansion and the annual Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony at Monticello. The VCU fellows are part of a larger coalition of 1,000 young leaders being hosted across the nation this summer through the Young African Leaders Initiative and President Obama’s effort to invest in the next generation of global leaders.

As runners in the inaugural RUN RICHMOND 16.19 approached Brown’s Island Sept. 17, the Emancipation and Freedom Monument awaited them. The monument features two 12-foot bronze figures – a male, and a female holding an infant – who represent those newly freed from slavery. Designed by artist and sculptor, Thomas Jay Warren, of Oregon, the brick plaza and landscaping was designed by architect Drew Harrigan of Four Winds Design and constructed by Fred Williams and his team at Williams Construction. Here is how Venture Richmond describes the monument: "On a rainy September 22, 2021, following nearly 10 years of planning and fundraising, Virginia’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Commission dedicated and unveiled Richmond’s newest monument — the Emancipation and Freedom Monument — on Brown’s Island, along Downtown Richmond’s riverfront. The new monument commemorates the efforts of both enslaved and free African- Americans whose ancestors endured tragedies and triumphs in their struggle to gain their freedom through emancipation.”

Higgins in words, photos// Noted photographer Chester Higgins, whose work has appeared in numerous publications including Newsweek, Essence, Life, Fortune and the New York Times, where he was a staff photographer from 1975 until 2014, talks about his life and career during an Artist Talk last Friday at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Mr. Higgins’ work in the exhibit, “Like a Study in Black History,” is on view at the museum through May 6. As part of the 28th Annual National African-American Read-In, the museum will host several community leaders reading from African and African-American literature related to works in the permanent collection. The free event will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at the museum, 200 N. Boulevard. Among the readers will be Mayor Levar M. Stoney, former Obama administration official Melody C. Barnes, Virginia Commonwealth University Assistant Professor Brandi Summers and consultant Dr. Betty Neal Crutcher, wife of University of Richmond President Ronald A. Crutcher.

Boone, were honored with 2019 Community Healer Awards on Aug. 21 as part of the Valuing Black Lives Global Summit held by the Community Healing Network at Virginia Union University. The honorees, from left, are Olufemi Shepsu, social worker and co-founder of the Abusa-Pa Black Family Institute; Virginia Com- monwealth University professor Tawnya Pettiford-Wates, founder of the Conciliation Project, a nonprofit social justice theater company; Ms. Boone; freelance writer and author Samantha Willis; Samuel D. Veney III, community activist; Lynetta Thompson, founder of the Mary G. The site of the former Oak Grove Elementary School has been vacant since January 2013 when Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary opened its doors. The Redeemer Assembly of Jesus Christ originally lost its bid of $275,000 to purchase the site after a City Council vote in August 2022. In September 2022, City Council approved Lynx Ventures’s request to purchase the site for $500,000.

Plans in 2016 had called for the old building to be converted into a commercial space, possibly for use by the city Department of Public Utilities. In 2019, DPU nixed the idea because of the cost of removing asbestos and other contaminants from the 11-acre site. The demolition has been in the works since July 2020. The site was best known for an iconic 60-foot-tall metal work called a gasometer that surrounded the empty, below-ground storage tanks. The gasometer has been carefully removed and could later be reinstalled as a piece of public art. More than $4.3 million has been invested to clear the old structures and remove contaminated soil from the property, which is envisioned as an East End development site.

Cityscape // This notice in the 1700 block of Colorado Avenue in the West End signals that construction may soon be finished on GRTC’s new bus rapid-transit system called “Pulse.” GRTC promised to overhaul regular bus routes and bus stops when Pulse starts operations, and the new signs posted around the area indicate GRTC is preparing for the end of construction and the start of service changes. The completion of Pulse would be good news for businesses that have lost customers along the Pulse route because of the construction work and commuters weary of the traffic disruption the $64 million project has created, particularly along Broad Street. In a statement to the Free Press on Monday, GRTC spokeswoman Carrie Rose Pace stated that “construction activities continue for the GRTC Pulse project,” noting that June 30 remains the fixed completion date under the contract with Lane Construction Co. “The project team continues to push to get the work completed as early as possible and will announce a service launch date” when that is known, she stated, adding that Pulse service is projected to begin this summer following testing and approval. Next week, Pulse stations at 10 locations are scheduled to get finishing touches, including installation of cedar ceilings inside stations and pedestrian curb cuts to make it easier for people in wheelchairs to reach the stations.  No additional work is scheduled on stations at four locations for the week beginning Sunday, April 8, according to GRTC. Those stations are located on Broad Street at Willow Lawn Drive, Staples Mill Road, Cleveland Street and the Science Museum of Virginia.

It culminated with a 2-mile, torch-lit walk along the Slave Trail between the Manchester Docks off Maury Street, where slave ships on the James River loaded and unloaded human cargo, and the site of Lumpkin’s Jail, a once notorious slave jail and auction site near Broad and 16th streets in Downtown.
