“That’s my daddy,” said 5-year-old Anais Lewis of Roanoke, while staring at the mural of his father, John R. Lewis, whose image and life was memorialized on May 26 at the Sankofa Community Orchard, 301 Covington Road on Richmond’s South Side. Mr. Lewis, who died in January 2021, taught students how to grow their own food and spent time “hanging out” in the garden, often keeping youngsters out of harm’s way as they got their hands dirty together. Mr. Lewis was the co-founder and executive director of Renew Richmond, a nonprofit that operated several urban agricultural sites and sometimes had pop-up stands where fresh produce that was grown and harvested by local Black youthS and adults was also often sold by them too. He advocated for Black communities to understand the power of gardening and self-sufficiency. Duron Chavis, the founder of the Sankofa Community Garden, said Mr. Lewis was one of the “founding fathers of Black urban agriculture in the City of Richmond.” The mural was created by lead painter Sir James L. Thornhill assisted by R. Vashti Woods, both of Richmond.

Each year when hundreds of art enthusiasts descend upon Byrd Park for the An- nual Arts in the Park, an award-winning show and one of Richmond’s largest outdoor events. The time-tested event recently celebrated its 52nd year. With its free admission, Arts in the Park’s nationally-rated juried art show featured more than 350 exhibitors from throughout country. Current and retired Richmond Police officers, including Henrico Police Chief Eric English, join Acting Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards, right, on Sunday, May 7, in commemorating the hiring of Richmond’s first black officers 77 years ago. This annual ceremony sponsored by Engine Co. #9 and Associates was held at the Virginia Historic Marker at Leigh Street and Brook Road near the site of the precinct where the officers were first assigned. The marker reads, “On 1 May 1946, Richmond’s first professional African American police officers were hired and assigned to the First Precinct at Smith and Marshall Streets. They were Howard T. Braxton, Doctor P. Day, Frank S. Randolph, and John W. Vann. On 16 December 1949, Ruth B. Blair became the first professional African American female police officer hired and assigned to the Juvenile Division. On 18 July 1964, Sergeant Randolph was promoted to Detective Lieutenant. While challenged by segregated conditions and discriminatory practices, their perseverance created an inspiring legacy.”

The $3 billion budget City Council approved earlier this week includes $215 million that has been set aside for the school system to build a new building to replace George Wythe High School on Richmond’s South Side, and to rebuild William Fox Elementary in Richmond’s Fan District. Fox, which caught fire and was gutted during a three-alarm blaze in February 2022, has started to undergo roof work. Earlier this week various City officials gathered to assess the work and provide updates to news media. Fox is expected to reopen for the 2025-26 school year.

A Little Free Library was dedicated to the life and memory of Anthony J. Binga Jr. on May 6 at The Baker Street Apartments, 100 W. Baker St. Mr. Binga, who died at age 60 on Oct. 14, 2022, was a North Side Richmond native and resident. Passionate about contributing to communities in need of assistance, he was especially attached to the children and families of Gilpin Court.

Several hundred people turned out last Saturday for the benefit Derby Day Party in Richmond to enjoy music, games, food and the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby and raise money for the Professionals Reaching Out to the Community (PROC). Leaders of the event included from left, Charmayne B. Vincent, chair of PROC; and the two co-chairs of the event, Janet Hawkes-Pleasants and Natalie Smith. The Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s new Children’s Tower officially opened April 30. The event featured VCU Police to help the patients settle in their new rooms and approximately 50 first responders that flashed their vehicle lights while patients’ flashlights beamed from their hospital windows. However, many observers found the sudden, unexpected 15- minutes wail of sirens from emergency responders disturbing and even triggering given Richmond’s recent propensity for gun violence with young people among many of its victims. When asked about the alarms, Kate Marino, manager for strategy, marketing and enterprise marketing for the VCU Health System, said: “The purpose of goodnight lights was to “The purpose of goodnight lights was to show the children and their families that there is a whole community surrounding and supporting them. First responder units from throughout the region came out and the reaction from inside the hospital was overwhelmingly positive. One mom described it as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience they’ll remember forever.” Perhaps. However, we hope that future displays intended to reflect a space where children can find comfort and healing are less about sounds associated with trauma and more about sensitivity and tranquility.

Multiple construction projects are underway at the Virginia War Memorial Carillon in Richmond. In 2016, Elizabeth L. O’Leary of the Carillon Civic Association described the historic monument: Rising a lofty 240 feet in the heart of Richmond’s William Byrd Park stands the Virginia War Memorial Carillon — the Commonwealth’s official monument to the approximately 3,700 men and women from the state who died as a result of World War I. The Georgian-revival tower houses a massive musical instrument made up of 53 fixed bronze bells of varying sizes, still played today by a carillonneur who strikes a pedal keyboard just below the bell chamber. Dedicated on October 15, 1932 — 14 years after the end of the Great War — the Carillon opened amidst a swirl of patriotic fervor and controversy. Its original design, commissioned several years earlier by the Virginia General Assembly from celebrated Philadelphia architect Paul Cret, called for a sleek classicized temple. Shortly after ground breaking, a citizen’s committee waged a successful popular campaign to build a carillon instead. Building the more expensive “singing tower” — a brick encased steel frame that originally supported the heavy bells cast by John Taylor & Co. of Loughborough, England — required additional fundraising to achieve the final cost of $325,000.
