On April 26, Virginia Commonwealth University opened the College of Humanities and Sciences’ new 168,000-square-foot STEM building. The six-floor building, located at the site of the former Franklin Street Gym at 817 W. Franklin St., will expand lab, classroom and office space for the College of Humanities and Sciences. Nearly 60% of VCU undergraduate students are enrolled in the college, which is home to 17 departments, two schools and three programs. The STEM building will feature 32 teaching labs; the Math Exchange, an innovative facility for math instruction; a Science Hub, a dedicated space for student/faculty interaction, study groups and specialized support for STEM classes; two 250-seat, team-based learning classrooms; computer labs; and large- and small-capacity flexible classrooms. It will feature instructional wet and dry labs and classrooms for teaching STEM subjects. The $125 million building was designed by Ballinger and Quinn Evans Architects and constructed by Hourigan.

New concrete structures rise on land in the 1600 block of North 31st Street where the former Armstrong High School once stood. These are the first steps in the creation of 105 new apartments — 45 for seniors and 60 for families, a majority of whom currently live nearby in the Creighton Court public housing community. The $26 million development is being undertaken by a partnership involving a nonprofit developer, The Community Builders of Boston, and the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority. The development is located near Nine Mile Road, about six blocks east of a residential, retail and commercial complex going up at Nine Mile Road, 25th Street and Fairmount Avenue that is to include a full-service grocery store. The foundation is being laid for the $6.3 million Eggleston Plaza at 2nd and Leigh streets in Jackson Ward, as captured Tuesday by a fisheye lens. When complete, the development is to include 31 apartments and a first-floor restaurant on the former site of the historic Eggleston Hotel. During the era of segregation, the hotel served renowned civil rights leaders, famous entertainers and other African-Americans who were barred from other Richmond hotels because of the color of their skin. The building collapsed and the site was cleared in 2009. The Eggleston family teamed up with developer Kelvin Hanson on the new project, according to city documents. MGT Construction is doing the work. The project is across 2nd Street from the Hippodrome Theater and Taylor Mansion entertainment, restaurant and residential complex. The planned development also includes 10 housing units going up nearby at 1st and Jackson streets.

Remembering Gabriel: Nearly two dozen people gathered Oct. 10 to mark the 218th anniversary of the death of Gabriel, the enslaved blacksmith who planned a rebellion in 1800 in what is now Henrico County. Gabriel fled after his plan was thwarted. He was captured near Norfolk and returned to the Richmond area where he was hanged on Oct. 10, 1800, in the area near the African Burial Ground in Shockoe Bottom. Last week’s commemoration was hosted by the Sacred Ground Reclamation Project of the Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality, which advocates for a 9-acre memorial park to be created on the site. Site work gets underway at Richmond High School for the Arts in South Side. A groundbreak- ing ceremony for the new school took place last July. Traffic on Broad Street flows past the new 15- story General Assembly Building at 9th Street in Downtown. More than $191 million is being invested in the building that was in planning since 2016, with development work starting in 2018. State officials are hoping Gilbane Construction can wrap up the work by this fall so members of the Virginia General As- sembly can be in their new offices ahead of the 2023 legislative session. Their offices were moved during the construction to the Pocahontas Building at 900 E. Main St. The new General Assembly Building replaces the former offices, which was comprised of four connected buildings with the tallest at 11 stories. The site once was home to the Richmond office of the Freedman’s Bureau after the Civil War and the Richmond Freedman’s Bank that largely served Black people. The site later was home to the Life Insurance Co. of Virginia before the state purchased it several decades ago.

Hundreds of people enjoy activities last Saturday at “Juneteenth: A Freedom Celebration” on the waterfront of the James River in South Side at the Manchester Dock. The three-day event, organized by the Elegba Folklore Society and its founder, Janine Y. Bell, marks the date on June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom after the defeat of the Confederates and Union forces took control of that state. Richmond’s celebration included educational sessions for people of all ages to learn about Africans brought to this nation 400 years ago and their struggles and contributions. At Saturday’s events, called “Independence Day Our Way,” Mary Williams sits in reflection at the site, which once served as a landing point for slave ships on the James River. A “Now Leasing” sign adorns an entry to the Church Hill North development on North 31st Street off Nine Mile Road in the city’s East End. While no announce- ment has been made, the sign signals that the yearlong construction on the first phase of new apartments is coming to a close. The development was undertaken by The Community Builders of Boston in partner- ship with the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority. The site is the former home of Armstrong High School, which was torn down to make way for the new residences. The first phase was announced on Oct. 30, 2018, when work began to include 60 family units and 45 apartments for seniors at a cost of about $26 million. Work on another 70 units was begun earlier this year, and those units are in various stages of completion. The total development is to include 256 units, including a few single-family homes. The project is the first step in the overhaul of the nearby Creighton Court public housing community. Some Creighton Court residents are to be moved to Church Hill North as planning for renovation or replacement of the 504-unit Creighton Court complex continues.

The site of an African burial ground at 5th and Hospital streets is shown from Interstate 64 going westbound. The name of the burial ground was added to the front side of a repainted gas station building constructed in 1959 at 1305 N. 5th St. Also known as the Shockoe Hill Burial Ground, the 1.2 acre plat on which this building stands is part of the original 1816 “Burying Ground for Free People of Colour” and the “Burying Ground for Negroes” (enslaved).
