How many wings can you take down? // Hundreds of Richmonders ate their way through the 3rd Annual Kickin’ Chicken WingFest last Sunday at the 17th Street Farmers’ Market in Shockoe Bottom. The festival, sponsored by the Enrichmond Foundation, coins itself as “Richmond’s biggest tailgate party,” with music and wings galore as restaurants compete for the coveted 2016 RVA Best Wings. Mama J’s Kitchen in Jackson Ward won the People’s Choice Award for best wings. People of all ages lined up to grab a wing or two — or five — in near perfect weather.

Workers are busy readying the Stuart C. Siegel Center at Virginia Commonwealth University for the start of basketball season, with a free preview of the men’s team 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the annual Black & Gold Game. The arena will be enhanced with four new luxury suites, a new scoreboard over center court, installation of a new sound system and new branding marks for VCU and the Atlantic 10 conference. The center’s seating capacity will remain about 7,700.

On April 26, Virginia Commonwealth University opened the College of Humanities and Sciences’ new 168,000-square-foot STEM building. The six-floor building, located at the site of the former Franklin Street Gym at 817 W. Franklin St., will expand lab, classroom and office space for the College of Humanities and Sciences. Nearly 60% of VCU undergraduate students are enrolled in the college, which is home to 17 departments, two schools and three programs. The STEM building will feature 32 teaching labs; the Math Exchange, an innovative facility for math instruction; a Science Hub, a dedicated space for student/faculty interaction, study groups and specialized support for STEM classes; two 250-seat, team-based learning classrooms; computer labs; and large- and small-capacity flexible classrooms. It will feature instructional wet and dry labs and classrooms for teaching STEM subjects. The $125 million building was designed by Ballinger and Quinn Evans Architects and constructed by Hourigan.

Taire Hubbard leads Huguenot High School’s Junior ROTC team in a practice Saturday before the Richmond team faced judges in the U.S. Army Junior ROTC Drill Championship. Anyone 18 and under is eligible for free breakfast and lunch through the U.S. Department of Agriculture-supported program without application or registration. Meals are available at 84 sites in Richmond, ranging from city recreation centers, schools and public housing offices to churches and day care centers. The goal is to ensure children receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. In past years, only 35 percent of city youths who receive free meals at school took advantage of the summer program. Mobile phones are making it simpler to find locations. Text the word FOOD or COMIDA to 877-877 and then enter a ZIP code to get information on nearby sites and times of service. Locations also are listed at www.fns.usda.gov/summerfoodrocks.

Meanwhile, the Northside Family YMCA is getting a $5 million makeover at 4207 Old Brook Road, the site it has occupied since 1974. The facility expects to remain open during the 10 to 11 months of construction and remodeling that began last month. The work will include expansion of the fitness area and more room for a teen center and additional programs, officials said. KBS Inc. of Henrico is the contractor for the work and a similar improvement program for the Petersburg YMCA. In response to Free Press queries, neither the Salvation Army nor the YMCA of Greater Richmond has identified any black-owned businesses involved in the work.

Welcoming the burgundy and gold/There’s no doubt that the Washington Football Team has real diehard fans in Richmond. After a year’s hiatus because of COVID-19, the NFL team received a big welcome back to its Richmond training camp on Wednesday by fans who turned out in droves. A long line formed early at the entry gate of the Bon Secours Training Facility on West Leigh Street as people waited eagerly to see their favorite players go through practice. Officials said that all the free tickets have been distributed for the camp that continues through Saturday, July 31.

Alfred C. Liggins III, CEO of development partner Urban One, discussed the Richmond Grand Resort and Casino project with about 75 Richmonders at Southern Kitchen Restaurant in Jackson Ward on Monday evening. The proposed $562 million gambling and entertainment complex is a joint venture between Urban One, a diversified media company, and Churchill Downs, the Louisville-based operator of the Kentucky Derby that also runs gambling establishments throughout the country. Two years ago, Richmond voters narrowly rejected a referendum that would have opened the door for a proposed casino. Two years later, the project is back on the Nov. 7 ballot. Mr. Liggins and representatives of Colonial Downs have met with several organizations, including churches and news media representatives to shed light on the revised casino project that promises jobs with an average annual salary of $55,000 and pledges of charitable donations along with $30 million in annual tax revenue for Richmond. The proposed project would be located in a former tobacco company site just off Interstate 95 in south Richmond, the same site that was identified in the first proposal. If the ref- erendum passes, gambling options include slots, an on-site sportsbook and gaming tables. The venue also would include a 250-room hotel, a 55-acre outdoor park, several sit-down dining options and a 3,000-seat concert venue, officials said at Monday’s event. While the venue is expected to attract Richmonders, its developers wager that most of its patrons will come from surrounding cities and states.

When completed, the complex is to include 154 units, with 72 to be set aside for current residents of Fay Towers, which is being vacated. City officials and representatives of five overseas cities join Monday in unveiling Richmond’s new International Guidepost at Kanawha Plaza amid a downpour. The new sign celebrates Richmond’s Sister City relationship with Richmond upon Thames, England; Saitama City, Japan; Ségou, Republic of Mali; Windhoek, Namibia; and Zhengzhou, China. Saitama’s representatives included members of the Japanese city’s Little League baseball team. Richmond began a relationship with its English namesake in 1930 and began forging bonds with additional cities in 1980 after forming the 13-member Sister Cities Commission.
