Fifteen area churches and a host of volunteers spent Labor Day helping Richmond students get ready for the start of classes the next day.

Left, Daunte Briggs searches for the right shoes at the ninth annual giveaway that Second Baptist Church on South Side hosted at its campus. At least 4,200 pairs of new shoes were offered. Thirteen churches, led by Third Street Bethel AME, teamed up to provide the free shoes at Second Baptist. Hundreds of volunteers worked with children and parents to find the right fit.

Above, sisters Kyata Johnson, 13, and Kaniya Robertson, 7, get back-to-school manicures at Cedar Street Baptist Church of God in the East End. Nail technicians Tasha Hamilton and Tynika Donald handle the work. They were among seven manicurists who volunteered at the Back-to-School Barber & Beauty Day. Volunteer barbers also provided free haircuts to children at the event.
