We CARE Festival Saturday at Hotchkiss Community Center
8/20/2015, 10:10 p.m.
There’s something for everyone at the 9th Annual We CARE Festival.
The community-oriented event will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Hotchkiss Community Center, 701 E. Brookland Park Blvd. on North Side.
The Smooth Concept Band and Curv Appeal jazz band are to perform at the free event. A gospel music workshop also is scheduled, as well as performances by step teams and praise and worship dancers.
Comedian Antoine Scott will emcee the event that is organized by four North Side churches — Fifth Street Baptist Church, First African Baptist Church, First Union Baptist Church, Fresh Anointing Cathedral — and several other organizations and businesses.
Also on tap, according to festival organizer Craig Watson:
• In the “Fun Zone,” free haircuts and food for children, as well as face painting, carnival games and an inflatable moonwalk, hula hoop contests and a game truck from 10 a.m. to noon.
• In the “Health and Wellness Zone,” blood pressure screenings, as well as information on healthy eating and the Capital Area Health Network’s mobile unit.
• In the “Empowerment and Education Zone,” 500 book bags will be given to children and voter registration will be offered.
The festival name is an acronym for wellness, education, community awareness and resident empowerment.
