CANCELLED, WITH FREE INDOOR CONCERT

The 27th Annual 2nd Street Festival outdoor event has been cancelled because of the threat of potentially dangerous weather. However, a concert by the group Con Funk Shun, will take place, but indoors, according to Venture Richmond, which produces the event. The free concert will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at The Hippodrome, 528 N. 2nd St. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., with entry being on a first-come, first-served basis. This weekend: 27th Annual 2nd Street Festival

Thousands of people will enjoy music, food, fun and more at the 27th Annual 2nd Street Festival in historic Jackson Ward this weekend.

The two-day festival — set for Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4 — celebrates the history, present and future of the historic neighborhood that was a vital part of daily life for Richmond’s African-American community.

R&B band, Con Funk Shun, and Richmond jazz artist James “Saxmo” Gates are headlin- ing about 40 acts and performers scheduled to entertain festivalgoers on the streets between Broad and Jackson.

Con Funk Shun had a string of top 10 hits in the 1970s and 1980s, including “Ffun,” “Shake

and Dance with Me” and “Chase Me.”

The eclectic Mr. Gates, a 1978 graduate of Richmond’s former John F. Kennedy High School, is a three
