In an update, Virginia State University has released its fall enrollment figures.

On Sept. 10, officials stated 4,632 validated undergraduate and graduate students, or students who had fully paid their bills, are enrolled.

That total is down 7.8 percent from the 5,025 students enrolled in the fall of 2014. It also represents the smallest enrollment at the university since 2001, according to data from the State Council of Higher Education.

VSU spokesman Tom Reed said the good news is that the school had projected 4,613 students this fall, meaning “we have exceeded our projection.”

In 2001, the school reported a fall enrollment of 4,638 students, the last time total enrollment fell below 4,700 students, according to SCHEV data.

VSU’s enrollment figure includes 790 freshmen, the smallest freshman class in more than 10 years.

As the Free Press reported last week, enrollment continues to decline at Virginia’s two public historically black universities, VSU and Norfolk State.
