Music, games, health screenings and a giveaway of school supplies will highlight the 10th Annual WE CARE Festival this weekend.

Open to all, the community-oriented, back-to-school event will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Hotchkiss Community Center, 701 E. Brookland Park Blvd. in North Side.

The letters of WE CARE translate into the purpose of the event: Wellness, education, community awareness and resident empowerment, said Craig Watson, who organizes the event.

Four North Side churches — Fifth Street Baptist Church, First African Baptist Church, First Union Baptist Church and Fresh Anointing Cathedral — sponsor the event with several community groups and area businesses.

Highlights will include performances by the Gospel Music Workshop of America, step teams and praise and worship dancers, Mr. Watson said.

There also will be a “fun zone” for youngsters with face painting, carnival games and contests. Barbers also will be on hand to provide haircuts, and more than 600 school book bags stuffed with supplies will be given away, Mr. Watson said.

Participants also will be offered blood pressure screenings and information on healthy eating as part of the promotion of wellness, he said.
