More than 4.3 million people are fully vaccinated in Virginia, or 51.2 percent of the population, while 59.4 percent of the population has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Nationally, the Biden administration announced plans this week to emphasize delivery of vaccines to family doctors, pediatricians and other youth-focused health professionals and to boost efforts with employers to get workers vaccinated.

The plans were shared as concern mounts about the spread of the Delta variant of the virus in the United States and abroad. The highly contagious nature of the variant has led to a growing number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths among the unvaccinated and infection among some people who are fully vaccinated.

With Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell and other Virginia localities still below the 50 percent threshold of adults fully vaccinated, state health officials urge greater caution from the public as they push local vaccination efforts.

State officials reported 681,599 cases of COVID-19 statewide on Wednesday, along with 30,666 hospitalizations and 11,436 deaths. Virginia's seven-day positivity rate is 2 percent. Last week, it was 1.6 percent.

According to state data, African-Americans comprised 22.5 percent of cases statewide and 25.1 percent of deaths for which ethnic and racial data is available, while Latinos made up 16 percent of cases and 6.5 percent of deaths.
