Just a month after she was forced off the bench in Chesterfield County, former General District Court Judge Pamela O’Berry has landed softly in the office of state Attorney General Mark R. Herring.

Mr. Herring’s office announced that Ms. O’Berry has been tapped to serve as general counsel to the attorney general following 12 years on the bench.

During the most recent General Assembly session, the state Senate blocked Ms. O’Berry from re-election to a new six-year term on the general district court after the Chesterfield Branch NAACP and state Sen. Joseph D. “Joe” Morrissey led an effort to prevent her from staying on the court.

The NAACP branch alleged that she imposed longer sentences on Black people and was less respectful of them in her courtroom.

Along with her service as a judge, Ms. O’Berry is a past chair and commissioner of the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Before going on the bench, she also served as general counsel for the Richmond Police Department and the Detroit Police Department.

Ms. O’Berry also previously served in the Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and was an associate with the McCandlish Holton law firm whose partners have included two former governors, Linwood Holton and his son-in-law Tim Kaine.

The Attorney General’s Office also announced that Sylvia Jones, a veteran with the nonprofit Legal Aid Justice Center, has been tapped to serve as deputy attorney general for the health, education and social services division.

Ms. Jones served most recently as the LAJC’s director of professional development. She previously was a senior software developer for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Ms. Jones’ career also includes experience in private practice. She also has been an adjunct professor for Virginia Commonwealth University’s Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs.
