The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia is expanding from curating exhibits to curating and hosting events.

Using the tagline “Where history, culture and cuisine meet,” the BHMVA this week announced its new venture, Events on Leigh, which will book rental clients for celebrations, conferences, corporate events and more intimate meetings within the museum itself.

Heather Anderson, community engagement coordinator for the BHMVA, also will serve as event curator. The venture is committed to supporting Black-owned and small businesses through its catering needs, while specially curated menus will highlight Black and African cuisine during these events, according to a news release.

“We take a Z to A approach to create experiences based on goals established by our rental clients,” Ms. Anderson said. “Each event is customized based on the interests, needs, and preferences of the client and curated to exceed those expectations. Every detail of the client’s experience is managed so the result is a meaningful and memorable experience for all attendees!”

The BHMVA, at 122 W. Leigh St. in Jackson Ward, once served as an Armory for Black soldiers and was the first such operation in the nation. When rental clients book through Events on Leigh, the history and culture of the museum become an in- tegral part of the event experience. In addition to the permanent display on the first floor, which features a 35-foot interactive timeline of Black history, the second floor offers traveling and national exhibitions.
