After 40 years, The Diamond will host its final games as Richmond’s baseball home next month. The Flying Squirrels recently announced “Diamonds Aren’t Forever: The Farewell Series,” a six-game sendoff against the Hartford Yard Goats from Sept. 9-14.
Built in 1985, The Diamond first hosted the Richmond Braves and saw future Hall of Famers Chipper Jones, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine take the field. Since 2010, the Flying Squirrels have called the stadium home, selling out 15 straight Opening Days and regularly leading the Eastern League in attendance.
“Ballparks are a rich part of American sports history and The Diamond is an icon in the region, representative of the best fans in the minors,” said Lou DiBella, managing partner of the Flying Squirrels. “The Farewell Series will give the park the celebration it and our fans deserve while we usher in an exciting new era for our club and city.”
Sept. 9 — Time Capsule Tuesday: Fans can submit items for a time capsule to be placed at CarMax Park. Those selected will receive free tickets. The first 1,500 fans will also get a commemorative T-shirt.

Sept. 12 — Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff: The Flying Squirrels will play as Las Ardillas Voladoras. Fans will receive an All-Diamond Team poster, $3 domestic beers during Friday Happy Hour and the largest fireworks show in team history.
