The Maryland Lady Wolves remained unbeaten with a 71- 56 victory over the Richmond Roadrunners on Friday night at the Henrico Sports & Event Center, holding off a second-half rally to stay atop the WABA standings.

The Roadrunners bounced back Saturday with an 86-72 win over the Maryland Monarchs in their final home game of the season, improving to 7-2 on the year.

Richmond cut Maryland’s lead to two points in the third quarter Friday before the Lady Wolves pulled away for the 15-point victory. About 60 fans turned out for the contest, many sporting Roadrunner shirts and voicing their displeasure with officiating throughout the game.

The Roadrunners started slowly, trailing 23-9 after the first quarter. Maryland led 49- 42 entering the fourth quarter.

“I think the third quarter was what hurt us the most because we were pretty consistent as far as defense and offense go throughout the game,” said Richmond forward Kiera Gaines. “But we got to the third quarter, we had too many turnovers and not really rebounding that well.”

Gaines led Richmond with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added 13 rebounds. Guard Kala Green contributed 13 points and five rebounds, while Vicki Collier added 11 points and nine rebounds.

For Maryland, guard Octavia Wilson recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Bianca Simmons added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Roadrunners close their season at 4 p.m. Aug. 31 against the Virginia Vitesse in Loudoun County.
