Youth violence thrives where opportunity is scarce

The Free Press reported that new research has shown that many youth violent hotspots are located in the less than desirable locations in our city. Youth living in areas like Gilpin Court, Mosby Court and other lower-class areas are more prone to violence than that of the upper- and middle-class communities.
Needless to say violent crimes are more likely to occur in these areas because they have become a breeding ground for crime. Criminals tend to prey on areas and people in which he/ she believes they can thrive. This is sad but true.
The environment has to change in order for this violence to stop. Many residents in these areas are afraid to talk with the police because of fear for their own lives. This type of cycle has to end if we are to have a chance at stopping some of this violence. We must develop a blueprint to keep our youth and everyone safe in these areas. Let’s get started because our youth deserve better.
