Johnson claims ACC Player of the Week after record game

Virginia junior guard Kymora Johnson earned Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for her scorching performance during games played Dec. 15-21, the league office announced. The Blue Ribbon Panel made it official: Johnson owned the week.
And for good reason.
Johnson torched Winthrop for a career-high 41 points in Virginia’s 88-53 blowout victory, delivering one of the most dominant individual performances in program history. She was nearly perfect from the field, draining 15 of 20 shots while catching absolute fire from beyond the arc — 10-for-13 from three-point range to set a new Virginia record. She added six rebounds, five assists and two steals for good measure.
The 41-point outburst places Johnson in elite company as just the second Cavalier ever to crack the 40-point barrier, trailing only Mimi McKinney’s 48-point explosion at North Carolina on Jan. 15, 1998. Johnson’s performance shattered the John Paul Jones Arena scoring record for both men’s and women’s basketball, and her 27-point second half set a new program standard for women’s games.
Her 10 three-pointers came within one make of the ACC single-game record and marked the first time a conference player has hit double-digits from deep since Wake Forest’s Jewel Spear accomplished the feat in 2021.
Virginia (9-3, 1-0 ACC) wrapped its non-conference slate with the statement win and now turns its attention back to league play. The Cavaliers play Clemson at home on Jan. 1, at 7 p.m.
