Voices will come together Saturday morning, Aug. 16, at Grace Episcopal Church in Goochland County for a workshop on African American spirituals and gospel music.

The free event invites church musicians, choir members, worship leaders and the public to explore the history, theology and musical traditions of African American sacred music.

The workshop will be led by Roy L. Belfield Jr., composer, educator and director of choirs at Goucher College in Maryland. Belfield, a Petersburg native, will guide attendees through hands-on choral sessions and discussions about the legacy of spirituals and gospel music.

A light breakfast will be served. The event is free but requires RSVP by Aug. 11. It will take place at Grace Episcopal Church, 2955 River Road West.

“We believe this music is sacred history,” said Michael K. Ross, director of music at Grace Episcopal. “This workshop honors the spirit and resilience of a people whose faith and artistry continue to shape lives and worship today.”
