A viral moment from Virginia State University’s 2025 spring commencement has turned into a successful fundraiser, bringing in $12,000 for the university’s Student Tuition Assistance Fund.
The VSU-themed clacking fans, which became a hit during a surprise “Boots On The Ground” celebration at graduation, were sold to the public for a limited time after a video of the ceremony gained millions of views online and was shared by national outlets.
Originally hidden under graduates’ seats, the fans were revealed just as the song “Boots On The Ground” by 803Fresh played, prompting graduates to dance and chant the song’s line “Where them fans at?” The excitement led alumni and community members to ask how they could get a fan of their own.
The university sold 600 fans, donating $20 from each sale to the tuition fund, which helps students facing unexpected financial hardship.
“It just goes to show how our viral videos have a profound impact,” said Gwen Williams Dandridge, assistant vice president for communications. “By offering the fans for purchase, we not only shared a piece of that unforgettable day, but we also helped to open doors for our Trojans through tuition assistance.”
VSU officials said proceeds will be used to help students cover tuition costs in emergencies.
