As Virginians continue casting ballots in the primary election ahead of November, a crowded field of Democratic, Republican and independent candidates is vying to succeed Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. The race has drawn a wide range of contenders with varying backgrounds and policy priorities.

The lieutenant governor of Virginia serves as the president of the state Senate and casts tie-breaking votes. The role is largely ceremonial but can be influential in shaping legislation, especially in a closely divided Senate. The lieutenant governor also is first in the line of succession to the governor.

Early voting in Virginia’s primary election began May 3. The deadline to register to vote is Tuesday, June 11. Primary Election Day is Tuesday, June 18. The general election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 5.
