Climbing for the Fallen
Firefighters, first responders and community members bow their heads in a moment of silence during the opening ceremony Saturday, Sept. 6 at Richmond Raceway after completing the Metro Richmond 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. The event honors first responders who died on Sept. 11, 2001, and those who later died from related health complications. The Metro Richmond 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb was held Saturday, Sept. 6 at Richmond Raceway to honor the 343 New York City firefighters, 70 law enforcement officers and nine emergency medical technicians killed on Sept. 11, 2001, as well as more than 300 first responders who later died from related illnesses. Firefighters, first responders and community members from Richmond and nearby counties climbed 2,200 steps — representing the 110 stories of the World Trade Center — or walked a 5K around the raceway’s track.
