A historical marker was unveiled at St. John Baptist Church in North Side, honoring Washington
Park, a historically African American community founded in 1870. The marker also includes a
Green Book plaque, which recognizes local sites listed as safe havens for Black travelers during
the segregation era. More than 150 people attended the event, which began with a short program
at the church.
