In 2018 in Virginia, 278 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes and more than 4,400 people were injured, according to MADD. Fatalities were up 12 percent over 2017, according to the organization’s data. Victims’ names were read as candles were lighted Monday night. The organization hopes the event will bring healing to families and motivation to curb impaired driving.

A “Black Lives Matter” banner hangs in October on the wall in front of a Monument Avenue residence near Allen Avenue, the epicenter of protests over racial injustice and police brutality since May. Signs like this one and logos with BLM have become commonplace on businesses and other buildings in and near Downtown and the Lee monument following an early spate of damage. The signs often were posted as a signal to spare the place from any damage.

A fence remains around the circle on Monument Avenue where the six-story monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee once stood. The statue was removed in September, and the pedestal was cleared away late last month. This week, City Council authorized Mayor Levar M. Stoney to accept the statue, pedestal and the land from the state. They are to be turned over to the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia in Jackson Ward, along with other city-owned Confederate monuments.

The event, held at Mount Olivet Church in Church Hill, brought together numerous organizations, businesses, movement organizers and area residents over food, music, dance, health and community engagement. Mandala: Sacred art/Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in India create a sand mandala at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts recently to share Tibet’s sacred visual and performing arts with area audiences. The monks’ work, created over four days, was completed in conjunction with the VMFA’s new exhibit, “Awaken: A Tibetan Buddhist Journey Toward Enlightenment,” that features roughly 100 historical and contemporary objects highlighting the role of art in Tibetan Buddhist culture and religious practices. Richmond area youngsters enjoyed the new equipment during a May 20 dedication ceremony for the Markiya Dickson Imagination Zone playground in Fonticello Park. The play area commemorates the life of Markiya who was 9 years-old when she was killed by gunfire that erupted in the park four years ago. Her parents, Ciara Dickson and Mark Whitfield Sr., are pleased with the playground, yet admit that their daughter’s death remains painful. “We’ll never get past it or get over it, so we’re living through it,” said her mother. “We’re learning how to cope with it.”

As Black History Month gets underway, this dramatic mural provides an artistic celebration of the people and events who represent protest, progress and achievement. Location: 504 W. Broad St. in Downtown. Richmond artists Ed Trask and Jason Ford created the mural, called “Voices of Perseverance,” as part of the Mending Walls RVA initiative. Launched by muralist Hamilton Glass, Mending Walls aims to bring together artists to develop projects that spark empathy and dialogue. Mr. Glass came up with the idea during the upheaval over racial justice and police misconduct that led to the removal of most of the city’s Confederate statues.

Year-old Deilani Bland-Murph holds on to the hands of her mother, Tyshell Bland, right, and that of a Richmond SPCA volunteer at last Saturday’s 20th Annual Dog Jog and 5k to benefit the pets in the care of the local SPCA. People and their pets came from all over the region to participate in the event held at the SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Road near The Diamond. The day was packed with games and activities for people of all ages. Deilani’s mom and the volunteer helped her on the “Little Paws” Fund Run for the youngest of all. The day kicked off with a 5K run/walk for people, followed by a leisurely mile-long Dog Jog for people and their dogs.

Celebrating Hanukkah: Dozens of people gather at the Weinstein Jewish Community Center in Richmond on Wednesday for the lighting of the menorah for Hanukkah. The eight-day Jewish festival of lights, which began Sunday night, commemorates the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem by the Maccabees after their victory over Antiochus, who outlawed Judaism in 167 B.C. To celebrate their victory, the Jewish people tried to carry out a ritual lighting of a menorah in the temple, but found only enough oil to light it for one day. However, the oil miraculously lasted for eight days. Traditional foods and gifts are part of the religious holiday that ends Monday, Dec. 10. (Sandra Sellars/Richmond Free Press)

Landscaping work that started in early June by YME Landscape continues on the former site of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The Supreme Court of Virginia ruled Sept 2., 2021 that the state could remove the enormous statue that towered over Monument Avenue in the state’s capital for more than a century and had, for many, become a symbol of racial injustice. Calls to remove the statue and others like it that were and remain scattered throughout the United States increased following the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Detroit police on Memorial Day 2020. The defeated war general’s final fate came on Sept. 8, 2021, with the removal of a 21-foot high bronze sculpture in his image and his horse, Traveller, on a granite pedestal nearly twice that tall.

Call it protest art Christmas-style. This new artwork now stands at the base the Robert E. Lee statue on Monument Avenue. The Black figure tops a fir tree, a traditional Christmas symbol, and adds a holiday dimension to the protest slogans and colorful artwork that have transformed the pedestal that holds the Confederate statue that the state is still battling in court to take down. The pedestal, which gained its new look during the late spring and summer protests over racial injustice and police brutality, has become a significant attraction for residents and visitors. The pedestal’s changed appearance also has garnered national attention, with the New York Times naming it No. 1 on its list of protest art and National Geographic featuring it on the cover of its special issue, “2020: The year in Pictures.”

Cityscape:Slices of life and scenes in Richmond/This elegant Richmond railroad bridge over the James River has stood the test of time. Woodrow Wilson was still president, the prohibition of liquor begins and the raging pandemic “Spanish flu” was killing millions of people when the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac and CSX-predecessor Atlantic Coastline railroads built the structure in 1919. Location: Between the Boulevard and Powhite Parkway bridges. Legendary engineer John E. Greiner designed the iconic arched bridge that was among the first rail bridges to be made of poured concrete. Dubbed the “million-dollar bridge,” the double-track bridge allowed trains to move through Richmond more quickly and to cross east-west rail lines that ran along both sides of the river. Considered an engineering marvel, the bridge continues to draw admirers.
