Carytown was filled with the living dead last Saturday as scores of ghoulishly costumed people participated in the 15th Annual Richmond Zombie Walk. The event, which draws even more spectators than participants, benefits the American Cancer Society. Participating zombies gathered at a staging area at Boat Lake in Byrd Park, where donations for the cancer society were collected and prizes were awarded in categories including the “Most Disgusting,” “Best Couple,” “Best Group” and “Zombie of the Year.” Photos were taken because, once in character, the zombies were asked to refrain from taking photos during the walk. The creatively costumed group then went to the starting point at the Byrd Theatre where they slithered, lurched, crawled and limped along the sidewalk in full zombie splendor up Cary Street to Nansemond Street, where they turned and paraded the five blocks back to the Byrd Theatre. Already, plans are being cooked up for next year’s pre-Halloween event.

Quanaisha Smith swabs her cheek Wednesday at a drive for potential bone marrow donors held at Virginia Union University. The event was organized by the James River Valley Chapter of The Links Inc. to widen the diversity among the pool of potential donors on the national registry. Bone marrow transplants are used to treat sickle cell anemia, aplastic anemia and certain cancers, including lymphoma and leukemia. According to the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, many African-Americans die unnecessarily because of the lack of donors. The foundation says the best chance of finding a match is with someone of similar race or ethnicity. Widening diversity in the registry is crucial to finding matches for all patients in need, particularly patients of color.

According to the regional Girl Scouts organization, the cookie program teaches youth members key life skills as they raise money to support the operation and programming that serves 12,000 children and teens in 36 cities and counties. “When you buy cookies, you are helping to power beneficial experiences for girls and build the next generation of female entrepreneurs,” stated Molly T. Fuller, chief executive officer of the regional Girl Scouts group.

Be a lifesaver // Representatives of three Virginia Union University organizations display plaques awarded to their groups Nov. 21 for having the highest number of registrants for the “Be The Match Registry.” That’s a national bone marrow databank designed to connect possible donors to people in need of a marrow transplant to fight diseases such as sickle cell anemia, leukemia and blood cancers. From left, the students are Paige McGilvery and Jahnae McCoy of Destiny’s Daughters (second place), Miss Virginia Union Khadijah Harvin of The University Choir (third place) and Deondrai McKithen of the VUU Student Government Association (first place). The drive was organized by the James River Valley Chapter of The Links Inc. The Links chapter will host its second annual community bone marrow drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Chesterfield Towne Center, 11500 Midlothian Turnpike. Burying the past A small group of mostly young people took shovel to dirt and buried a Confederate flag near the James River on Memorial Day in a symbolic funeral for the symbol of racial hatred. Ashley Williams, with her dog, Sebastian, a pit bull-spaniel mix, on the front porch of her East End home, is happy to stay in during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her family, she says, has experienced health scares in recent weeks, both related and unrelated to the coronavirus. “I have always valued family and friends, yet the communication with loved ones is even more cherished than before,” said the founder of BareSOUL Yoga. The experience also has shifted how she connects with people and the community — through online offerings and resources. The silver lining? “I am able to appreciate, explore and enjoy my home.”

Nitika and Joshua Achalam may be staying home, but they are staying busy. They are outside their home in Fulton with their chickens, Octavia Butler and Zora Neale Hurston. Asked how their lives are different during the pandemic, Mrs. Achalam, executive director of Project Yoga Richmond and an herbal healer with True Grit Botanica, said, “We’ve launched an online membership platform where the community can remotely access yoga and mindfulness content from PYR ambassadors.” Mr. Achalam, a reggae artist and educator, said, “Shows are postponed. But we’ll regroup and spend more time in the studio.” On April 4, he performed in “Couchella,” a digital music festival that helped raise money for the Makindu Children’s Center in Kenya. The money will help install hand-washing stations at the center to combat the spread of COVID-19. Asked about the silver lining, both say the crisis has caused them to slow down and concentrate on the health and well-being of themselves and family.

Location: Seminary and Claremont avenues in North Side. Richmond area damage estimates ranged from $2 million to $5 million, including $770,000 in damage to 10 Richmond school buildings. Officials said all but $100,000 of the schools damage would be covered by insurance. Dominion brought in hundreds of workers, who helped restore power by late Monday. Fifty crews from the City of Richmond, meanwhile, cleared fallen trees blocking 156 streets and removed 700 tons of tree debris through Tuesday. As of Tuesday night, Byrd Park, Battery Park Pool and Bryan Park had yet to reopen. The city and Henrico County are offering to haul away tree limbs from residents’ property. In the city, residents can place limbs and brush near the curb or alley for pickup. County residents must register for service at (804) 501-4275 or online at www.henrico.us/services/storm-debris-pickup. The county’s deadline to sign up is Friday, June 24.

The Virginia Department of Transportation continues its bridge rehabilitation project at 1st Street over Interstate 95 in Jackson Ward. This section of 1st Street will see new sidewalks, travel lanes and shoulders. The department plans to rehabilitate five bridges over I-95 in Richmond. Structure replacements and minor substructure repairs will be done on bridges on North 1st Street, North 4th Street, North 5th Street, North 7th Street and the East Broad Street overpasses.
