A new sign now sits on the grassy circle at Monument and Allen avenues where the Robert E. Lee statue sits. The original sign informally renaming the circle for Marcus-David Peters, a 24-year-old high school biology teacher who was shot and killed by Richmond Police officer in 2018 during what has been described as a mental crisis, was cut down by an unknown person or people around Aug. 16. State officials and law enforcement said at the time there was no official order for its removal. The new sign was put in place Aug. 30.

Life as we know it has changed since the coronavirus pandemic. We took for granted the grand outdoor festivals, the events along the waterfront and the public ceremonies that drew thousands of people. Now, under Gov. Ralph S. Northam’s executive order to stay at home and away from groups, those areas are largely empty as people try to prevent the spread of the potentially fatal disease. Be a lifesaver // Representatives of three Virginia Union University organizations display plaques awarded to their groups Nov. 21 for having the highest number of registrants for the “Be The Match Registry.” That’s a national bone marrow databank designed to connect possible donors to people in need of a marrow transplant to fight diseases such as sickle cell anemia, leukemia and blood cancers. From left, the students are Paige McGilvery and Jahnae McCoy of Destiny’s Daughters (second place), Miss Virginia Union Khadijah Harvin of The University Choir (third place) and Deondrai McKithen of the VUU Student Government Association (first place). The drive was organized by the James River Valley Chapter of The Links Inc.
